We’ve been getting inquiries lately on what is allowable within city limits.

– The statewide burning ban is still in effect. For more information: https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/forestfire/permits.html

– An outdoor fire for cooking or recreation in an outdoor fireplace, enclosed fire pit or fire ring is allowable and does not require a burning permit. HOWEVER, burning garbage or pallets, or large debris in setting is not allowed. And please be thoughtful about wind direction and your neighbors. While the scent of a fire in the air is pleasant the smoke from a fire blowing directly at you is not. Use common sense.

– ANY OTHER BURNING withing city limits requires a burning permit. It’s only $5!

To obtain a permit, please visit City Hall between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Before you begin any burning, it is necessary to call the non-emergency police number at 608-685-4433 to notify them of your address, the duration of your burn, and when you anticipate finishing. Once you have completed burning, you are also required to call the same number to inform them that you are done.
Please be aware that due to the statewide burning ban currently in place and Buffalo County still being in the high-risk category, burn permits may not be issued at this time.
